Technology and Applied Studies

Year 7 Technology

The Technological and Applied Studies Faculty of Bonnyrigg High School offers a wide range of technology-based subjects that can be studied from Years 7 to 12.

Technology (Mandatory) develops in students an understanding of design and design processes and the technologies that can be employed to produce creative and innovative solutions to identified needs. It enables students to select and use materials, tools and techniques in a responsible and safe manner.

Topics

In Years 7 and 8 all students will undertake study in Technology (mandatory), using a variety of tools and machinery to complete specified design projects. Students in this course will be given comprehensive instruction in the use of computers and their various applications. Students will use the latest in educational software to enhance their learning.

Topics that may be studied include:

  • Industrial Technology Timber
  • Industrial Technology Metal
  • Graphics Technology
  • Food Technology
  • Textiles and Design
  • Computing Studies

Outcomes

Design Projectsinvolve the design, production and evaluation of quality solutions that are functional and meet identified needs or opportunities. Students must undertake a minimum of four and a maximum of eight design projects. By producing design projects a student:

  • applies design processes that respond to needs and opportunities in each design project
  • generates and communicates creative design ideas and solutions
  • selects, analyses, presents and applies research and experimentation from a variety of sources
  • demonstrates responsible and safe use of a range of tools, materials and techniques in each design project
  • applies management processes to successfully complete design projects
  • identifies and explains ethical, social, environmental and sustainability considerations related to design project

Assessment

In Years 7 and 8 Technology (Mandatory) must be studied for at least 200 hours. This is a requirement for eligibility for the award of the School Certificate. Technology (Mandatory) is the foundation course for a range of elective courses in the Technology learning area. Students will complete a class task each term. They will be assessed on their class work, application, and class tests.

Year 7 – TAS and ICT - GATS

The TAS faculty provides specialized opportunities for talented students to explore and extend their knowledge in these areas. The Engineering studies area is one area where students will be able to examine model creation using the latest foam forming machine. The computer system across the school allows all students access to the latest in internet learning. In addition to the computer rooms, interactive whiteboards are being installed to allow for the use of the latest ICT learning programs.
