English

Year 7 English

English is a mandatory course studied by all students from Year 7 to Year 10.

English provides educational opportunities that:

  • engage and challenge all students to maximise their individual talents and capabilities for lifelong learning
  • prepare all students for effective and responsible participation in their society, taking account of moral, ethical and spiritual considerations
  • encourage and enable all students to enjoy learning and to be self-motivated, reflective, competent learners who will be able to take part in further study, work or training
  • promote a fair and just society that values diversity
  • promote continuity and coherence of learning and facilitate transition between primary and secondary schooling. (From English Years 7 – 10, Syllabus, October 2002)

Topics

In Year 7, students study English for eight lessons per fortnight for the entire year. Topics covered include:

  • Area of study: Identity
  • Language All Around Us: understanding and composing multi-media texts
  • Understanding Film and Television Scripts for Performance and Production
  • Introduction to Shakespeare
  • Investigating Poetic Techniques and Creating a Poetry Anthology
  • Wide Reading in Australian Literature and Responding to and Composing Short Stories.

Outcomes

To familiarise students with the purpose of various texts and the composers' purpose. To learn about the language of persuasion and how the medium of production affects meaning. To understand dialogue, characterisation, setting, stereotypes, grammar, paragraphing, punctuation and language forms and features.

Assessment

Students will be assessed in class by completing class activities and common tasks that the entire year completes. There will be a major task each term and regular homework given by the class teacher. It is important that students bring their homework diary every lesson and record all work set in their diary.

Year 7 English – GATS

on their understanding of moral, ethical and spiritual matters. This will be explored through a range of challenges set for the students. ICT will be an important component of the program.
