Resources available to students

We have 5 recently refurbished state of the art school science laboratories and one dry laboratory, all equipped with new Interactive White Boards. Students have access to wireless network which enables students to tap into the internet. This provides the technology to fully engage students into learning in a rapidly changing technological world.

Junior Science Years 7-10

Science is a mandatory course that is studied substantially in each of Years 7–10 with at least 400 hours to be completed by the end of Year 10.
Course description
Science develops students' knowledge, understanding and skills in making sense of and explaining the biological, physical and technological world, enabling them to make informed choices and responsible decisions as individuals and as part of the community.
What will students learn about?
Through their study of science, students develop knowledge and understanding about the living and non-living world. Students examine the historical and continuing contributions of scientists and the implications of scientific research for scientific knowledge, society, technology and the environment.
What will students learn to do?
Students work individually and in teams planning and conducting investigations. They evaluate issues and problems, identify questions for inquiry and draw evidenced-based conclusions from their investigations. Through this problem-solving process they develop their critical thinking skills and creativity. They gain experience in making informed decisions about the environment, the natural and technological world and in communicating their understanding and viewpoints.
School Certificate
Satisfactory completion of the mandatory study of Science during Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) will be recorded with a grade on the student's School Certificate Record of Achievement Part A. In Year 10, students undertaking the Board Developed Course in Science sit for the Science School Certificate test.
Accelerated Science
Bonnyrigg High School Science offers accelerated progression as one it strategies to respond to the academic and social needs of gifted students. When stated simply, it involves the promotion of a student to a level of study beyond that which is usual for their age. As an intervention tool acceleration has long been supported by research literature. Year 9 gifted students have the opportunity to do year 9 and 10 Science all in one year, then do a Senior Science (eg. Chemistry), while completing the rest of their year 10 subjects.
